PG Podcast 10 - Julian McAuley on 24-hour live-streaming from his office
August 2016 (perspective of an assistant professor)
Julian McAuley is an assistant professor of Computer Science and Engineering at UC San Diego. He's famous (in certain social circles) for running his own version of Panda Cam in his office – broadcasting a 24-hour live stream of his work activities via a webcam and screencasts of his two computer monitors.
In this PG Podcast taped in Julian's office at UCSD, we discuss his philosophy of doing science out in the open and his motivations for building his personal panda cam rig. We then brainstormed ways that voluntarily broadcasting one's work activities can potentially lead to better personal work habits, a more open lab culture, and even foster a sense of camaraderie in the often-solitary grind of research.
