PG Podcast 2 - John DeNero on teaching statistics using programming
July 2016 (perspective of an assistant professor)
John DeNero is an Assistant Teaching Professor in the UC Berkeley EECS department, where he teaches the giant (giant!) introductory computer science course with over 1,500 students each semester, as well as a new introductory course on data science. John and I knew each other from our time working at Google, and we were even officemates for a few months. He is a power user of Python Tutor and has incorporated it into both his Berkeley courses and his free online textbook.
In this PG Podcast, we discuss John's thoughts about teaching statistics and data science using programming to prepare students in many majors for data-intensive jobs, and how that differs from teaching programming to aspiring software engineers.
