PG Podcast 23 - Jake VanderPlas on data science writing and teaching
February 2017 (perspective of an assistant professor)
Jake VanderPlas (@jakevdp) is a Senior Data Science Fellow at the University of Washington's eScience institute. I first learned about Jake's work from watching his online talks on Python and data science topics. I was especially impressed by Statistics for Hackers, which I referenced back in PG Podcast Episode 2.
In this PG Podcast (which is actually the first time we've spoken!), we talk about Jake's recent experiences with writing his O'Reilly programming book The Python Data Science Handbook, putting it all online for free as Jupyter notebooks, and how he integrates technical writing, public speaking, and research into his unique job as a data scientist in academia. We then dive into the challenges of teaching data science to people who are coming in with widely varying levels of prior background in programming.
